Background
In October 2004, nobody would have guessed that a small amateur drifting event organized by Québec Tuning magazine would make such a big splash. After only one week-end of promotions via a small hand-out at the SCP Auto Salon, held every October at the Montréal Olympic Stadium, over 1,500 people would show up on a sunny October Sunday at l’Autodrome St-Eustache, to watch what was then considered a bunch of clowns driving their car… sideways!
Two years and many amateur events later, the Castrol DMCC drifting championship was born. With five rounds, held in 3 different cities (Québec, Montréal and Toronto), the Castrol DMCC drifting series would aim at bringing together the right combination of drivers, sponsors, media and fans and created a cocktail that would impress any motorsport and extreme sport fanatic.
Great efforts also had to be invested to educate the public on the sport of drifting and the championship itself. Criteria important to the judges such as angle, driving line, speed, car modification and the secret behind a good drifting tire all had to be communicated to a curious public who were used to seeing race cars cross a finish line to win.
Today
Now on it’s third year, the 2008 Castrol DMCC drifting series is set to become the biggest, most popular, most attended and most diverse grassroots motorsport in Canada. With 6 rounds in 3 provinces, from East to West, massive media coverage, rising drifting stars, new cars and new sponsors, the stage is set.
